Productivity and Technology Implementation
“It's not going to be an easy ride, there will be rough patches, but we will get there”- said one of the project managers while explaining the benefits of a new technology implementation project kick-off meeting with VPs and C Suite leadership. A few months after project implementation, odds were in his favor, he delivered a quality product, under budget & on time!
One can leverage a five-step methodology of Design, Deployment, Stabilization, Improvement, and Transformation to facilitate the expectation discussion.
Truly setting expectations on when a technology implementation will deliver results and when it will start creating impact is the key.
During the design phase, most of the stakeholders are closely involved, the team is talking about the future and shaping future blueprints. This raises expectations, anticipation and magnifies the positive impact the implementation may bring. Once we move to the deployment phase and until the deployment stabilizes, this along with baseline productivity make a triangle of despair. Because till this time technology is implemented but productivity is not increased as expected. In most of the cases, we are still at the same place where we started from. Once things are stabilized, most of the users start to accept the change and are onboarded on new technology. This lets the productivity graph incline in the right direction. Finally, when the improvement phase is over, productivity hits its peak and it concludes the transformation.
It is evident that expecting transformation at an earlier stage will result in setbacks, hence knowing different phases, theoretical timelines will set the foundation for productivity and technology transformation.
